Sustainability, both economically and socially, has become a musthave in all industries and “green productivity” is the guiding theme at this year's Agritechnica. Increasing farm productivity while protecting the environment and nature with the least possible use of resources for operations is a key challenge that industry will face in the coming decades. For agriculture, considerations of sustainability go far beyond the growing of crops. As a global supplier of coatings for machinery, Mankiewicz helps manufacturers achieve environmentally conscious and sustainable production when painting the surfaces of their machinery. After all, the manufacture of agricultural machinery also has an impact on the ecological footprint of agriculture itself. For several decades, Mankiewicz has specialized in making rugged and efficient coatings for tractors, harvesters, ploughing and tilling machinery and other types of agricultural equipment. The coatings are applied to the exterior surfaces as well as internal components such as hydraulic cylinders and transmissions. "By definition, paint protects machines and thus extends their life cycles," points out Carsten Bartsch, Sales Director Agricultural Equipment. "However, in the modern age that is no longer a sufficient claim to sustainability. That's why 25 years ago we started optimizing the coating processes and paint systems for the agricultural machinery industry." For many surfaces, single-coat paint systems have become standard in the industry. At the end of the 1990s, Mankiewicz created excitement in the industry with the introduction of its innovative Monolyer® system. It is a system that even today, optimized for the needs of modern machines and painting processes, achieves significant savings in material and energy costs. Then as now, the trick is to combine corrosion protection with mechanical and chemical resistance in the paint in such a way that one coat provides complete and lasting protection. Recently, metallic shades have also become feasible. That’s an attractive extra, because design features are increasingly called for in the agricultural machinery industry. With the optimal application of mono-coat paint system, there are two ways the manufacturer benefits: Firstly, coating his machine is cost-efficient and the result is high quality. Secondly, the machine is given a sturdy and durable look - a key emotional factor that helps determine the value of machinery in this market. "Where mono-coat systems cannot be used at the customer's site, we also have other approaches to make the coating as sustainable as possible," Carsten continues. "Depending on the customer's coating process, VOC-reduced high-solids coatings can be used. Oven-off drying also helps to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the painting process. Here, the paint dries at room temperature without any additional energy input - and at a comparable speed to paint systems that would have to go into the oven." On the Mankiewicz stand at Agritechnica, Hall 17, C04, visitors can experience and even try out the application of the systems in a coating simulator. A virtual reality painting contest challenges all booth visitors to prove themselves in a competition for the best possible painting result. Text & Pictures: Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co.
